Pepper Explained
A Pepper Dog carries the Gene Formula (atBCDEGmrSt). This color is dominant in nature and will re-produce itself when bred to a dog that is the same color or to one that carries the Graying (G) gene provided the (at allele) remains the same. Only one (G) gene needs to be present to produce the color. The color appears typically like salt and pepper and a pup is born dark turning Pepper as it matures. The base color of the dog is black and tan.
If the (at) black and tan gene is changed to an (ay) tan or (ayat) sable gene with the rest of the alleles remaining the same the dog will be Mustard. If the (at)  black and tan gene is changed to an (A) black gene with the rest of the alleles remaining the same the dog will be Kerry Blue.  If the (at) black and tan gene is changed to an (as) black saddle gene with the rest of the alleles remaining the same the dog will be Yorkie Blue. If this dog also has white on the coat it means that the (S) gene would be replaced with one of these White producing gene patterns, (si, or sp) in any combination. For more info see White Chart.
