Chocolate and Tan Explained
A Chocolate & Tan Dog carries the Gene Formula (atbCDEgmrSt) and will reproduce its color only if bred to a dog of the same color or to a dog that is carrying the Chocolate (b) gene recessively.  The Tan markings or Points of tan that show on the coat are specific to this gene. This color can also be dominated by the color Black and the color Tan. The Tan points can also vary in shade from a light creme to a deeper brown color. This color is commonly called red in some breeds like the Doberman but in genetic formula will not produce the color red or red tan. The distinguishing feature is the brown, chocolate, red or self colored nose of the chocolate dog that is never black.
